  • Colleague has to work with his bully

Good evening, I hope I've come to the right place,

I work in a company and have been head of a department there for a year. I have been in this department for a total of 5 years, at first I was just an employee and as mentioned above I have been the manager for a year now.

    A brief history:
When my predecessor was still in charge of the department, let's call him Kai, he had a colleague (Hans) on his back, as I and the others have noticed. I don't know if it was bullying or not, but Kai always spoke to him in an unfriendly and aggressive tone and criticized every little thing he did. Hans had no other problems with the other colleagues or with me. I didn't have any problems with Kai myself, but I didn't think his behavior towards the employee was right either. However, I didn't want to get involved and didn't do anything at first because it was none of my business.

Kai then moved to another department, which he also managed, and our line manager appointed me as the new manager. Kai trained me. I and Kai now have all the knowledge you need for the department, such as orders, bookings and much more.

When I'm absent, I've always asked Hans to be my deputy, as he knows the most about it from his training and I trust him and have a lot of confidence in him, unlike Kai. Hans also has to deputize for me as he is the only one who works full-time, the others in the department are part-time employees.

So far, the substitution has always worked well, but when I'm on vacation for 2 weeks or longer, things can go wrong, as Hans often has to turn to Kai in serious cases.
Kai is therefore the only contact person in the company, as he previously managed the department and trained me.

In the past, I've noticed that the two of them don't really get on and get into arguments at every joint undertaking, be it a company party, etc. The two of them also get into arguments outside of working hours. The two of them have also come into conflict outside working hours.
Anyway, I told Hans to contact Kai, because they don't have to get along, but they do have to work together. I also have some colleagues that I don't like, but I still have to talk to them.

Hans also gets all my emails, which he has to work through.
I've trained Hans as well as I can, but with some things someone often asks something that Hans then doesn't know what to do with, such as whether this or that can be sent, or whether the order can be brought forward, and so on.
It once happened that a colleague called me on vacation about a problem that needed to be solved. Hans had refused to work with Kai and the colleague now had the wrong data, I was then able to correct something with the laptop while on vacation.
I told Hans he didn't need to be afraid to ask Kai, but he always said that Hans only gave him stupid answers when he needed help and didn't actually get any real help. Most of the time Kai does it and solves the problem.
I've already spoken to Kai and he just said that Hans is exaggerating.

As I said, I don't want to get involved in their dispute, but hans is the only employee who can cover for me when I'm on vacation.
    Do you have any advice?

Yes, that will probably be the solution. If the two of them really don't get on, then your intervention won't do much good either. I would stay out of it. Otherwise you'll end up being the one to blame
